A Common Household Item
While a pencil sharpener is a common household item for some, I know that my family never had any at the house. We grew up on a farm though, so there was another sharp tool that we were never in short supply of. The Pocket Knife! While you could use several other knives for sharpening a pencil, the pocket knife is best. More accurately a Swiss Army knife does the trick the best out of all of them because of it’s size and style of the blade, having a good sized handle and a decent place to rest your thumb so that you can push enough to cut the best colored pencils.
If you’re starting from a new pencil, one that has never been sharpened, you’ll want to start at half of the length of your thumb back from the flat end of the pencil. If it has already been sharpened, just start a centimeter or two back from where the pencil’s color ends.
When sharpening, or cutting anything, cut away from yourself to prevent any injuries. Safety first. Keep your thumb on the dull side of the blade and cut down only once before turning it. Make sure you start cutting back from the edge far enough so that you can’t get a good point at the tip. When you turn the pencil, be sure to angle the blade so that as you turn and cut it will actually create a point at the tip. After it starts to come to a point, just make sure the graphite isn’t too long, because that will break too easily. Also make sure it’s not too short, otherwise you can’t write with it. After only a minute or two you should have a well sharpened pencil and scab free hands!

Most Americans are no strangers to high blood pressure. Either you are currently dealing with it yourself, have experienced it in the past, or you know someone who is trying to lower their own. With highly processed, high-sodium foods ready for us in just minutes at the fast food restaurant just down the block, it’s no wonder the typical American’s lifestyle sets us up for high blood pressure. Thankfully, simple dietary changes can help us manage our numbers. Here are two of them:
1) Lower your sodium intake. According to the FDA and http://Bpmonitoradvisor.com/, Americans consume about 3,400 mg of sodium each day. However, the recommended amount is no more than 2,300 mg. If you’re trying to lower blood pressure, aim for 1,800 mg of sodium or less in a day. Eating foods that have natural diuretic effects such as asparagus, dandelion root, oats, and cranberry juice will also help you to lower your blood pressure.

If you aren’t drinking enough water each day, your body will use the salt you consume to hold onto whatever water is being ingested (this is water retention). This can lead to dehydration, a common culprit of high blood pressure.
